A Nourishing Herbal Favorite

If there was one herb I think almost everyone could benefit from, it would be nettle leaf. Nettle is one of those herbs that herbalists have loved for hundreds of years because it is incredibly nourishing, gentle, and supportive for the whole body.

Don’t let the word stinging nettle scare you — once the plant is dried or steeped into tea, the sting is gone and what’s left is one of the most mineral-rich herbs you can drink.

Nettle is often considered more of a nutritive herb than a medicinal herb, meaning it feeds and strengthens the body rather than forcing a quick reaction. Those are some of my favorite kinds of herbs because they work slowly and gently over time.

Nettle Leaf for Hair, Skin, and Nails

Nettle is especially loved for hair and skin health because of its mineral content, particularly silica and iron.

Nettle may help support:

  • Hair growth
  • Stronger nails
  • Clearer skin
  • Scalp health
  • Reduced hair shedding

Some people drink nettle tea regularly, while others use nettle as a hair rinse or in herbal hair oils.

Nettle for Seasonal Allergies

Nettle is also commonly used during allergy season. Many people drink nettle tea in the spring to help support the body during seasonal pollen changes.

It’s often combined with herbs like:

  • Peppermint
  • Elderflower
  • Red clover
  • Lemon balm

Starting nettle a few weeks before allergy season is a popular herbal tradition.

Nettle Supports the Kidneys and Urinary System

Nettle leaf is considered a gentle diuretic herb, meaning it helps the body move excess fluids and supports kidney function.

Because of this, nettle is often used to support:

  • Kidney health
  • Urinary tract health
  • Fluid balance
  • Gentle detox support

It’s a very gentle cleansing herb compared to harsher detox herbs.

How to Use Nettle Leaf

One of the easiest ways to use nettle is as a tea.

Simple Nettle Tea

1 tablespoon dried nettle leaf
1 cup hot water
Steep 10–15 minutes
Strain and enjoy

You can drink 1–3 cups per day.

For a stronger mineral infusion:

  • Add 1/4 cup nettle to a quart jar
  • Fill with hot water
  • Cover and steep 4–8 hours or overnight
  • Strain and drink throughout the next day

This is a great way to get the full mineral content from nettle.

Nettle is one of those herbs that doesn’t need to be fancy or complicated. It’s simple, nourishing, and incredibly supportive for the body over time.

If you’re new to herbs, nettle is one of the best places to start.
If you already love herbs, nettle is one you’ll probably always keep in your cupboard.
